Chinle C&S Society members organize and participate in a variety of field trips, both local and regional. These field trips are one of the great benefits of club membership. In the past, members have enjoyed local “Cactus Walks” and “Flash Field Trips” on the Colorado National Monument, Escalante Canyon, Kannah Creek, the Little Bookcliffs Wild Horse Range and other nearby sites where we can view plants in habitat. Overnight field trips also showcase natural history and archeology in addition to cacti, succulents and other flora. These have included trips to Capitol Reef UT, Fantasy Canyon UT, the Crump Greenhouse in Buena Vista CO and Marble Canyon AZ.
Our 2017 field trip was based out of Vernal Utah and featured cacti, Fremont Culture and Ute rock art, Fantasy Canyon, and the oil, gas and gilsonite resources of the region. Our two back-to-back 2018 trips to the Marble Canyon area in Arizona hit the cactus blooms absolutely perfectly and the location was ideal for explorations into the rich geologic and cultural history of the area. In 2019 we targeted the spectacular geology and cacti of the Wedge Overlook area in Utah along with stops that included Yellow Cat. Our 2022 field trip took us to the greater St. George area and the 2023 excursion was to have been to the Saguache area, but had to be cancelled at the last minute due to rain.
Space on these trips is usually limited but we can sometimes accommodate non-members.
